There is no need to worry.
- Pamela Brown, 'A Thousand Tears'

they're digging up the street again,
& a car crash keeps the news crew busy.
i wish i could stop thinking about death,
step back, close my eyes,
& lean into the future.
the sun keeps rising,
& a flock of lorikeets
start ripping up the mango tree;
their wings unfold like symbols.
do you remember when you asked me
about the human condition?
i think i could give you an answer now,
but i'm not sure my dumb heart will make it.
i figure we'll learn
to keep our hands to ourselves,
if not to stop wanting.
50 dreams say we don't know the future,
but the future stares clear-eyed at us.
