research report — provisional results suggest it’s physically impossible to drink enough beer to be able to cope with japanese television’s new year variety extravaganzas…

frankenpoem
not myrrh, or the gasping doctor laboriously
climbing the stairs in the hospital, that is, castle,
or the legion of furies that powers the heart’s
ambitious nostalgia, colliding with sydney harbour
& some sort of outback theme park you didn’t
live in as a child. there’s no point railing against
the passage of time or your addled concepts of
permanence, now the wish is the historical phantasm
your host family celebrates every evening,
wondering if you got lost at the office again,
just reheat the appetisers & everything’s apples,
awash with paint & the fumes from the sewer.
in venice, a tourist ponders the magnificent
pigeons, annoyed by the way the buildings distract
you from the fancy at hand. meanwhile, tokyo,
intransigent & edumacated, stage fright means
nothing at mister donut, slap a particle in front
of a random verb & look relieved at what arrives
in response to your order then return
to the question of the poem you left flapping
on an ecologically dubious tray, pleading
for a sushi chef to put us out of its expensive misery.
woah — winter arrived. looked like it might have been planning to give us a miss, but apparently it was simply lulling us into a false sense of security…
the end is nigh — december? really?
pig boy (official announcement): baby boy, expected early april 2007…
visitor, visited — hello alix, it was nice to see you.

direct from the nosebleed seats — i know it was billed as the vertigo tour, but this was ridiculous… temporarily switched off my fear of heights to catch u2 with sumie, rob, mari & 9,998 others at the saitama superarena last night…

verdict — not too shabby. not too shabby at all… pretty much the career retrospective, although nothing (unless i missed it) from pop… covered all the bases, & the set list would match up pretty well with a u2 mix tape if i was ever inclined to make one… oh, & the edge is, i think, a genius…
approximate set list (not necessarily in order) — city of blinding lights, vertigo, elevation, until the end of the world, new year’s day, angel of harlem, the first time, pride (in the name of love), sometimes you can’t make it on your own, miss sarajevo, sunday bloody sunday, bullet the blue sky, with or without you, one tree hill, desire, beautiful day, one, where the streets have no name, mysterious ways, the fly, window in the skies, all i want is you…
