::: minor technical difficulties
so anyway, we’re more or less moved into the new house. which is to say we’ve moved in, & are more or less unpacked. still some ways to go, but we’re getting there.
it’s been a little busy, to say the least. first time i’ve done a move with the pokemons in tow, & yeah, for two little people, they have a lot of stuff. personally, i blame the parents.
experiencing some minor technical issues with the blog at the moment which may or may not be reflected in this post. entries i’ve tried to post in the last week have been getting weirdly formatted (not substituting the line feeds properly) so i’ve deleted those to post whenever i figure out what’s wrong.
the pseudo-real time twitter feed is also a little flakey, & the weekly digests seem to be showing up sporadically. ah well, one of these days.
update: yeah, so this got the weird formatting too. have fixed it by hand. will try to figure it out later.

::: really? it’s not sunday?
as it turns out — having a public holiday on a tuesday really messes with your mind. where by your, i mean my. everything feels so very sunday.
been hacking around with various templates for a couple of hours & have just about reached the conclusion that i probably should manufacture some kind of server apocalypse & pretend that i don’t have a database backup. bad design decisions come back to bite you on the arse, every time.
i really want to move away from the Everything Posts To The Blog Model & start separating stuff out into streams, running WordPress more as a CMS than a blogging platform, but because i apparently wasn’t thinking too hard when i first installed WordPress all those years ago & started posting like a fool, i’m faced with adding a metric shitload of metadata to several hundred posts to get it working the way that i want it to work. gotta admit, that sounds both fun & likely to happen any time soon…
of course, the other option is to just kludge something together & wait until i get so annoyed by it that i actually get the editing done…
speaking of being annoyed by things — version 2.0 of the WordPress for iPhone client is out & is somewhat bemusing… works ok, although i haven’t as yet tried to upload any photos, which didn’t always work out so well in the past, but i’m slightly puzzled as to why it always loads into the review comments screen. generally speaking, if i’m gonna launch it, it’s because i’m wanting to post something… if there’s a setting to change the default behaviour, i’ve not yet been able to find it.
varying degrees of shiny — i have to admit my interest is piqued by the new 27″ iMacs… & i also have to admit that windows 7 is running better on my thinkpad than vista ever did… i really wish the x61 had a higher resolution screen though… if i wanted to peer at text in a tiny window i’d use my iPhone… speaking of which, installed a couple of photo-manipulation apps on it the other week… i probably should post some of the results.
so tomorrow must be — not looking forward to monwednesday… although i guess friday’s closer than it otherwise would be…

::: new & improved
updated version of the WordPress for iPhone client is live in the AppStore. fixes categories & the accelerometer weirdness. also seems to be happy to post photos, although let’s see how long that lasts…

::: linkage, misc.
nice — amazing what a difference being able to copy & paste makes… feels like every single app is hooked into the cloud now…
unsurprisingly, my old friend & sparring partner the WordPress for iPhone client is in need of some 3.0-style love. refuses to display anything on the category selection screen (so everything is getting posted to the default category only at the moment), & it does this weird thing on launch were it looks like it’s not completely sure which way is up — seems to be polling the accelerometer & then the whole display does a quick animated barrel roll & you’re (mostly) good to go…

::: today, take two
so anyway… this software is really starting to get on my nerves… spent about 15 of the 30 mins i grabbed for lunch today writing a post, only to see the damn wordpress for iPhone client post it into nowhere, making sure as it did so to remove all traces of the saved draft… ah well, you gotta laugh, right? that or smash the phone into little bits, & it’s not really the phone that you wanna smash…
so let’s see, what was it about? started off by mentioning that after approximately seven hours of meetings yesterday (about as much fun, & about as productive as it sounds) i’d decided to get out of the office & try to find something healthy for lunch today… i went on to note that i’d made it as far as the smoking room on the sixth floor (i then paused briefly to acknowledge that yes, there are a number of aspects to my life that i need to work on, & furthermore, that my location at that point in time was pretty much indicative of how my brain works)…
a short meditation on how i was currently unable to sleep through a full night followed, replete with musings about that being of some concern… but, as i seem to remember writing, no doubt my insomnia will pass, & in any case things could always be worse…
the highlight of the day was taking the pokemons to hoikuen for the first time in ages, the three of us walking hand in hand, with haruki shouting every time a bus or truck went past, & hana talking about how one of her friends came over to visit last night… taking them to hoikuen meant i was late for work, but, as i went on to write, sometimes you just have to say, “fuck it.” after all, all the things i had to do today were still there when i got there… (hell, some of them will still be there tomorrow…)
after all that, i predicted there was most likely a convenience store sandwich in my immediate future… at which point i saved, made a couple of edits, saved again, & optimistically tried to publish the post…
as it turns out, i was right about the sandwich… let’s see how the publishing thing works out this time around…

::: random photo test #2
interesting — may be coincidental…
but it seems happy to attach a photo less than photo #400 in my camera roll… not so happy about photos after photo #400…
update: ok, it appears that was coincidental… still generating errors/crashes more often than not…

::: random photo test
having rebooted… let’s try again… nope. buggy piece of crap. first the XML parser chokes, then it comes back with a bad login / password error. interesting that the same login / password works fine for posts without photos… that’s it. i’m going to bed.

::: dumptruck, check. steamshovel, check
post-pizza, pre-cake — haruki with a couple of his presents…
or not, since the wordpress for iPhone client has decided to revisit its ever so endearing buggy piece of crap mode…
ok, more than one way to post a photo… twitterfon to the rescue…
this is really starting to get on my nerves… initially saw the problem when trying to attach multiple images to a post… then it started choking when trying to add an additional image to an existing post… now it refuses to attach a single image to a new post… not like that’s a key piece of functionality or anything…

::: confidence inspiring
sheesh — well that was fun… made the mistake of trying to add a few pictures to that last post after i’d initially published it… a couple of spontaneous phone reboots, client lock-ups, & a complete inability to post anything at all (with bonus xml-rpc errors!) ensued… eventually had to remove & re-add the blog… the client appears to be slightly happier now, but i really don’t trust this app all that much any more…

::: nerd test #3
ah — if you start writing http:, it autodetects it & pops up a dialogue to offer to help with creating the link… ok, that’s kind of cool…
really? it reads the bookmarks from mobile safari? hmmm… ok, let’s go with it might be supposed to read the bookmarks from mobile safari… let’s try that again… nope… ah, ok, that was part of a feature request, rather than how it’s supposed to work… ok. it’s still relatively cool. as with most things, having copy & paste available will be a help…
& now that i’ve spent a bit more time browsing the trac tickets, it looks like the photo stuff is disabled on purpose in landscape mode, which is fair enough…

::: nerd test #2
meanwhile, in landscape mode…
yesterday’s photo, the right way up… seems marginally more stable editing posts… although managed to crash it via the comments moderation screen… still can’t find all that much by way of options… being able to define how i wanted my photos resized would be helpful… maybe that’s a server-side setting? & no sign of any assistance with creating links… all in all, not particularly overwhelmed with 1.2.x…
oh — & it still refuses to add photos in landscape mode, which is not what i was expecting from reading the trac ticket for the 1.2 upside down image bug… of course, it’s possible i might have misinterpreted the comments in the ticket…

& the image…
is the right way up in 1.2.1… although it crashed twice while trying to post that… which happens to be the front & rear gearboxes & suspension arms of one of my R/C cars…

::: chiba revisited
kicking it — pokemons running riot, defeated the concrete slope of death… behold the incredible upside-down image functionality of the WordPress for iPhone client v1.2…
not the most useful undocumented feature — although, given my lack of success in finding any up to date documentation, i guess that’s a potentially spurious claim… other stuff in this release includes the ability to work with pages & moderate comments… i read somewhere there was also a plan to assist with creating links, but i can’t find anything in the interface that points to anything like that… the photo inversion is kind of a showstopper though… 1.2.1 is currently pending in the app store approval queue, so fingers crossed…
interesting — as far as i know, unless you’ve gone down the jailbreak route, there’s no way (other than backing up & restoring your entire phone) to roll back an app to a previous version should you, hypothetically speaking, happen to install a new release that hoses one of the core pieces of functionality you rely on…

::: better
fitter, healthier, more productive — back to work today, with the breathing & the lack of fever & absence of dizziness…
wordpress 1.5 — came out last week & as of a few minutes ago you can consider me upgraded. i’ve just done a quick & dirty kludge of the existing template/css into a theme for the moment, but it looks to be working. some things may be broken somewhere, but it looks okay on a quick once over… go to whoa (including time spent backing up existing wordpress 1.2 installation & database & reading instructions while kludging together theme) for the whole deal was less than an hour… will start turning on new features as i get time to play with them…
